Competition Fraud, Scams and Cons
How to identify fraudulent prize notifications.
If you only remember one thing about comping remember this
You will never have to pay for a prize or call a Premium Rate number to receive a prize. An unfortunate aspect of comping is the amount of scams that seem to crop up.
You may receive letters, phonecalls or emails telling you that you have "definately won one of these prizes!"The letter/call will then ask you to ring a premium rate number to claim your prize.
These calls often cost £1.50 a minute and last for well over 5 minutes!.
These are not genuine competitions.
You may even receive one if you've never entered a competition before.A winning letter or other form of winning confirmation will be just that - a communication telling you you've won.
You will have to do no more than wait for your win to arrive.Top Tip: If you are unsure look up the company on the web. If they don't exist or have people complaining about cons, possible fraud or proven scams throw the letter away or delete the email.
Top Tip: Check your comping records to see if you've ever entered a competition with the company contacting you.Top Tip: Don't be put off comping by these scams. They are generally few and far between.
